| dc.description.abstract | El mielomeningocele es al principal defecto de tubo neural y causa de discapacidad.
La prevención con ácido fólico puede reducir hasta en un 70% los casos por lo que es recomendable que toda mujer en etapa fértil tome 400mcg de esta vitamina diariamente. Existe desconocimiento de sus complicaciones y manejo por parte de un alto porcentaje de trabajadores de la salud, incluyendo médicos. Se asocia frecuentemente a hidrocefalia, malformaciones músculo esqueléticas, problemas de la marcha, infecciones urinarias con incontinencia esfinteriana, constipación y amerita un manejo multidisciplinario. Idealmente debe referirse a un centro especializado en las primeras 24 horas de vida para su adecuado abordaje.
